's sterling bipartisan work on tropical storm sandy. i never saw what came about last night, this powerful swing of support to the president. not just him but his party in senate races across the country. our question tonight, what happened? but i can't begin our usual political discussion tonight without a strong sad personal note. i was on last night for ten hours straight from 5:00 in the evening till 3:00 in the morning. a few minutes to 3:00 i said something terrible. i said that i was glad about the coming of tropical storm sandy because of its impact on this national campaign. it was a terrible thing to say, period. i can say it was because i was tired but the fact is i wasn't thinking of the horrible mess this storm has made of people's lives up here in new york and elsewhere. it's not until you read the local newspapers that you know the horror this has reeked on people's lives. very good people's lives. i grew up in the south jersey shore. i have relatives living there still. i failed to see the damage down in new jersey, staten island and other places around here. it is truly a

during an unseasonably cold spell in the northeast. adding to the damage left by hurricane sandy. a nor'easter blew through the east coast yesterday, dumping snow and rain on a region that's barely begun to dig out from sandy. we've got new pictures from staten island where several inches of wet snow are threatening to topple already weakened trees. power was knocked out to some 60,000 homes in newark and new jersey overnight. many of which had just had their service restored after many days in the dark. there's also renewed headaches for millions of commuters as passenger trains grind to a halt, and at least 1,300 flights are kept at the gates at the airports. let's go to meteorologist bill karins for a look at what is unfolding here. bill. >> good morning. before i get to the details, talking about joe's point there, nine days apart between these two events. i can almost guarantee you go back through history of hurricane landfalls, and i don't think any area has ever seen a snowstorm nine days after they dealt with a storm surge like we had with sandy. i mean, it's just ridiculous tha

sandy and the nor'easter which hit the region last night. those power outages are making it very difficult to get gas and new york mayor michael bloomberg has signed an emergency order instituting a gas rationing policy today. he estimates only 25% of the city's gas stations are operating and we're finally starting to get estimates on how much that superstorm will cost. new york cover andrew cuomo said sandy inflicted $33 billion in new york state day lone. new jersey was hit harder. these numbers will be astronomy cal. the family of robert champion jr. has rejected a settlement from florida a&m university. he died after being beat on a bus as part of a hazing ritual conducted by the university's marching ban. 14 people were charged with criminal hazing. the attorney says $300,000 is the maximum amount allowable by law but the family's attorney called the offer an insult. it has been 462 days since this country lost its top credit rating. what are we doing to get it back? the fiscal cliff is still there. still weighing on stocks. the dow fell another 121 points. the nasdaq and s&
